Making Children a National Political Priority

Rebuild and Renew America Now

Ask Congress to support the child-friendly principles in President Obama's first budget

President Obama's Fiscal Year 2010 budget provides a visionary blueprint that turns away from the economic policies of the past and seeks to invest in our future by expanding opportunities for all. His budget commits major investments in health care reform, education, and child development while restoring fairness to our tax system over time in a responsible manner, (read "President Obama's First budget and what it means for our children").It builds upon the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to protect American children and families from the damaging impact of the recession and sows seeds of a sustainable prosperity.

The Every Child Matters Education Fund asks you to sign the petition below in support of the President's "Blueprint for Change"and to build upon the President's budget priorities for children. It will be delivered to the White House and Congressional leadership as they are considering this budget.

We strongly urge the Congress to follow the priorities set forth in the President's blueprint "A New Era of Responsibility - Renewing America's Promise" in finalizing the Budget Resolution.

It is our firm belief that if these priorities are enacted we will turn back the harsh trend of rising poverty, unemployment, hunger, and homelessness. We can extend opportunity and security for families in all walks of life by expanding health care coverage, making college more affordable, supporting the financial and nutritional needs of low-income families, expanding affordable housing, investing in a far-reaching policy that will develop cleaner sources of energy and protect the planet by reducing global warming pollution, and generate good jobs to rebuild our middle class.

These steps will set the federal budget on a responsible path - meeting the needs of families and making long-term investments in our nation's future while gradually reducing the deficit.

Both the House and the Senate budget resolutions include key investments in programs that benefit children from birth through adulthood, including health care reform, education and vital support to struggling families. However the House budget provides more long term support with a discretionary funding level almost $8 billion larger than in the Senate resolution. This will better help ensure that we can make the investments that are critical for our children’s futures. We urge you to support a final resolution that includes the funding level established by the House.
