  • The G-20 promised swift action for the world’s poor in their April meeting last year and since then have backtracked on many commitments. A recent report from Jubilee USA Network found that, of the $50 billion in new resources that the G-20 promised to the poorest more than year ago, less than half has been delivered. U.S. taxpayers mobilized $285 billion to bail out the top 20 “too-big-to-fail” Wall Street companies – that’s 11 times the amount the G20 has mobilized to help the poorest countries. And, nearly all that’s been promised will simply create more debt.

  • Since the G-20’s second summit last September, only $1.2 billion in new resources to the world’s poorest has been delivered - the same amount the Canadian government will spend on security for the three-day G-8/G-20 summit. And, because it’s been in the form of new loans, it may create a renewed debt crisis down the road.

  • While leaders and international financial institutions scramble to mitigate debt crisis in Greece, Africa’s debt crisis continues to silently kill. Huge debt burdens, exacerbated by new aid in the form of loans, not grants, has forced African countries to prioritize debt service at the expense of HIV/AIDS prevention, the most basic education, and clean water. The G-20 must take leadership to make good on their commitments to help the poor, without creating more debt.

  • As the world’s richest countries meet, the impoverished world silently suffers without a voice in the institution. We must broaden the discussion on international economic cooperation beyond the 20 most powerful economies in order to be accountable to the low-income countries and smaller economies, which are directly affected by decisions made at the table.
