Coffin Lake, deep in the Lionhead Recommended Wilderness Area, is a critical wildlife habitat area. Photo:© John Gatchell |
At GYC, we are all for quiet, human-powered recreation on our public lands. But some areas are so pristine and sensitive that even mountain bikes don't belong. Such a place is the Lionhead Recommended Wilderness Area straddling the Continental Divide along the Montana-Idaho border, just west of Yellowstone National Park.
The Gallatin National Forest proposes maintaining the wilderness character of the Lionhead by managing this extraordinary country for non-motorized and non-mechanized use. This will result in the closure of four trails (totaling 25 miles) currently open for mountain bike use - a closure we endorse.
The Lionhead is a critical wildlife corridor between Yellowstone National Park, points west and the Lee Metcalf Wilderness in the Madison Range. The area features nine sparkling lakes, world-class wildlife habitat (for grizzly bear, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, wolverine, elk) and nine 10,000-foot peaks.
The Lionhead is the ONLY wilderness recommended by the Gallatin National Forest and has been included in every Montana state wilderness bill dating back to the 1980's. These closures still leave thousands of miles of trails on the forest outside of recommended wilderness area for mountain bikers.
Your voice will go along way toward supporting the Forest Service's proposal to close these trails Please join us in letting them know you want the Lionhead Recommended Wilderness Area managed for its unique wilderness qualities.
