Yellowstone Ecosystem Action Alert

Say Yes to the Snake River,
No to Guns in Our National Parks

Dear Supporter,

The Snake River, pictured here, is one of 13 rivers and streams that would be permanently protected by S.1281.

Urge your U.S. Senators to support the Snake Headwaters Legacy Act!

Last year, just a month before he died of leukemia, U.S. Senator Craig Thomas of Wyoming introduced S.1281, the Snake Headwaters Legacy Act. This landmark legislation, which would mark the largest addition to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System in a generation, would permanently protect nearly 400 miles of rivers and streams around Jackson Hole. It would also ensure that these streams forever remain pristine, free of dams and open to fishing, camping and whitewater rafting. Among the legendary waters to be protected are the Snake, Lewis, Buffalo Fork, Gros Ventre and Hoback rivers.

After Sen. Thomas' untimely death, the Snake Headwaters Legacy Act was carried on by new Wyoming senator John Barrasso as a tribute to his fallen friend. Sen. Barrasso skillfully piloted S.1281 through the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee this past May. It now awaits a vote of the full Senate, which could happen any week now. That's why we need you to call your two U.S. senators today to ask them to support S.1281, which has been renamed the Craig Thomas Snake Headwaters Legacy Act to honor its original sponsor.

Calling your two U.S. senators and urging them to support S.1281 is super easy. Follow this link to get the phone numbers to contact the senators of your state: your state.

When the Senate staffer picks up the phone, all you have to say is: "Hello, my name is ________, and I'm calling to urge Senator ________ to support S.1281, the Craig Thomas Snake Headwaters Legacy Act."

Then the staffer will ask you for your address. That's all there is to it!

If you would like to learn more about S.1281 and track it as it makes its way through Congress, visit the Campaign for the Snake Headwaters' website .

Thank you for speaking out on behalf of one of Greater Yellowstone's most spectacular natural treasures!

Call your Senators today!

Say No to Guns in our National Parks

The gun lobby won a major victory last month when the Bush Administration proposed new, weakened rules related to the transport of guns in our national parks. Despite the fact that the current regulations -- requiring guns to be unloaded and safely stored -- have served our parks well for decades, the administration is proposing to allow park visitors to carry loaded and concealed weapons.

These changes are unwarranted and unnecessary. The Ranger Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Association of National Park Rangers have said they oppose any moves to change gun regulations in our national parks. These men and women who ensure the public's safety daily should know best how to manage firearms.

Comment today: Tell them not to change this commonsense rule!

Our national parks are some of the safest places in America. Nothing suggests a change is necessary or prudent. Please write a letter supporting our current "unloaded and stored" regulations so the law enforcement professionals can do their job.
