Dear Supporter,
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is taking comments on its proposal to delist the grey wolf in the Northern Rockies and turn authority for management of wolves over to the states of Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. The proposal would allow the states to kill wolves if they believe the wolves are causing unacceptable harm to elk and deer populations.
Naturally, wolf populations will affect elk herds- elk are the primary food source for wolves. But game herds are impacted by other factors such as loss of habitat to subdivision, drought, and oil and gas drilling. In addition, even with the presence of wolves, many elk herds in Greater Yellowstone are currently well above optimal population levels, and in a few areas there are more elk than the habitat can support.
