Yellowstone Ecosystem Action Alert

Help Protect the Henry’s Fork
Your Comments Needed!

Cody Economic and Natural Heritage Report

Dear Supporter,

Every year, anglers flock to the world renowned Henry’s Fork of the Snake River in search of large, wild trout. The Henry’s Fork is widely recognized among fly-fisherman as one of the true gems in the western United States, and perhaps the world. Not only does the river support a tremendous fishery, but the entire watershed is home to a truly remarkable diversity of wildlife. Grizzly bears, bald eagles, trumpeter swans, Yellowstone cutthroat trout, moose and elk all rely on the habitat found in the Henry’s Fork watershed. Comment Today.

The proposed retrofit would raise the level of the Chester
Dam by three feet, but do nothing to improve fish mortality
in the two irrigation canals on either side of the dam.

Currently, there is a proposal to retrofit an existing diversion dam on the lower Henry’s Fork for a hydroelectric power facility. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is in charge of permitting the Chester Diversion Hydroelectric Project and is now seeking input from the public. GYC believes the existing proposal contains serious flaws and oversights that, if approved, will cause harmful impacts to the Henry’s Fork. Now is the time to join GYC in asking FERC to revise the current proposal in a way that protects and enhances the watershed, rather than degrades it. Please take this opportunity to speak up for the Henry’s Fork – your voice is needed!

Cody Economic and Natural Heritage Study

Greater Yellowstone Coalition, supported by the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce and Cody Economic Development Council, commissioned economist Dr. Larry Swanson of the O'Connor Center for the Rocky Mountain West to study the Cody-area economy and its population trends to learn how best to secure its economic future, continued quality of life, and exceptional landscapes.

Dr. Swanson's findings? The next 15 years will see Park County, Wyoming follow a trend of increasing population, driven by people seeking the amenities of nearby national park and forests lands. Agriculture and extractive industries such as mining and logging will have a diminishing role. Construction and health care will serve as engines of the economy as new home are built and the population ages.

Dr. Swanson warned, however, "This amenity-driven growth can be used for economic development objectives, but we have to realize that you can kill that golden goose." He presented his findings at two presentations in Cody, WY on Dec. 4th.

Many of the findings in his report apply to other gateway communities as well, so we've made it widely available for download. His report, entitled Roots of Prosperity is available on the Publications Page of our website. Visit, and download it for free! Other parts of this report, including Dr. Swanson's Summary of Park County Economy: Restructure and Change in a Growing Region, can also be found here.
