Dear Supporter,

We've got some exciting news to share with y'all this round, including a Victory at Desert Rock, Summer Action Camp Announcement, and our interview response to the Department of Homeland Security!  Read on!

Victory at Desert Rock!

Last week we received great news from Elouise Brown, who has gained national attention for her work to stop the coal-fired Desert Rock power plant in New Mexico, through the Dooda Desert Rock campaign.  DDR is now feeling the payoff from their hard work and dedication blockading the plant's construction site for more than two years: the EPA announced last week that they are filing a motion to remand the coal plant's air permit!

From Elouise:  "I will let you know as soon as the date is set for the celebration and of course Ruckus is always invited and welcome to the DDR camp & DDR issues.  Another EPA decision will be made by the 23rd of May, either way the withdrawal of the permit will be celebrated.  The 23rd could be another victory............we'll see!  We always need support from Ruckus & all supporters.  Thank you."

Criminalization of Dissent: Responding to the Homeland Security Report

In January the Department of Homeland Security issued a memo which named Ruckus an "anarchist extremist" group likely to be a cyber threat. It took a while for the memo to lodge a response from the media, but we were recently asked to grant an interview about this report, which we have posted on our website.

Now we are thinking of ways to respond to this and the larger issue of criminalization of dissent; folks using nonviolent direct action are increasingly targeted, surveilled, and criminalized, including the Green Scare, cyber attacks on organizing groups, and the recent anti-racketeering charges brought against tree sitters. Keep an eye on our site* for more!

Best,
adrienne, sharon, megan and john
