I am writing to you both to express my deep concern about U.S. policy in the region and to urge you to meet with the School of the Americas Watch delegation soon arriving in Bogotá, Colombia.

The nine-member delegation consists of men and women from across the US, and represents a wide variety of life and faith experiences. They gather at the gates of the Tolemaida military base—one of seven Colombian bases to which the U.S. military has been granted access for 10 years under the U.S.-Colombia Defense Cooperation Agreement of 2009—to protest current escalation of U.S. militarization and express solidarity with courageous Colombians working for peace and justice. They were recently joined in their vigil by Justicia y Paz, the Movement of Victims of State Crimes, the Mothers of Soacha, SINALTRAINAL, and others.

They believe, as I do, that the continued escalation of U.S. military presence brings only violence and instability to the region. I strongly urge you to meet with the delegation and to become an ally in redefining U.S./Latin America relations to create a more peaceful and democratic hemisphere.
