Now that the election is over, it is vital for all of us to step up our democratic participation. Corporate interests are ramping up from spending Super PAC millions to lobbyist billions, but you can beat ‘em to the punch: meet with your Congressional Representative this December to address concerns about corporate lobbying! During December, Congress is on recess so it is a prime opportunity to get a meeting in your district while they are home from DC and ask them some important questions about where they stand regarding corporate lobbyists and money in politics. Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before- we can help you every step of the way. Our handy guide will let you know who your Representatives are, how to set up a meeting with them, and even show you how much campaign $$ they got from Wall Street! The 2012 electoral results unveiled the power and limits of corporate money to influence elections, and the real significance of votes. Nonetheless, voting every few years is not enough to keep a democratic system healthy. If over $629 million has been spent by Super PACs to try to sway U.S. voters, we can expect that in the coming months the billions spent in corporate lobbying will try to sway the Congress. We have to let Congress know we are keeping them accountable to us, their constituents so that we can protect our democracy from the multi-billion dollar lobbying industry. Out of town this December? Call, e-mail, or Facebook your Representative. Have questions? E-mail me at hillary@globalexchange.org. For democracy, Hillary V Lehr Elect Democracy Campaign Director P.S.
