Attend Democracy School in San Luis Obispo October 12th-13th
 Residents in San Luis Obispo, CA will attend a Democracy School as one of the first steps in a community-wide rights-based campaign to protect their water and ban fracking!
The school will cover the history of corporate power, the limits of environmental regulatory law, and how a rights-based ordinance can help assert their right to BAN unwanted activities like fracking.
Bay Area Activists come together for the Global Frackdown!
 The Community Rights Program joined dozens of activists from around the Bay Area, Los Angeles (and the world) on September 22nd to say ‘NO’ to fracking in our state!
The SF day of action was a march and rally with speakers including Community Rights Program Director, Shannon Biggs. It was the first major action around fracking in the state and it was clear from the energy of the event that there will be many more to come until communities statewide ban fracking.
This Month: Indigenous Peoples Confront False Climate Solutions
Under the guise of emerging climate policies, Indigenous Peoples' territories are being targeted as ‘carbon sinks’ to allow industry to continue polluting. Hear from Indigenous leaders around the world working to protect community land rights and promote equitable, rights-based climate solutions that respect traditional knowledge and the principles of environmental justice.
Co-hosted by Friends of the Earth, Indigenous Environmental Network, Amazon Watch, Global Exchange, Rainforest Action Network, International Development Exchange, and others. Sliding scale $10-$20 donations; no one turned away.

The Herakles Debacle: New Film Exposes Massive Deforestation Disguised As Sustainable Development
 The Herakles Debacle is the telling of the land grab by New York-based Herakles Farms and resistance by the local Cameroonians.
Join us October 11th 6pm at the James Irvine Foundation Conference Center in Oakland, CA for a film screening and panel discussion to provide an overview of the situation and resistance from impacted communities and solidarity networks. Hosted by the Oakland Institute. More information here.
