First defined by Vía Campesina in 1996, food sovereignty is “people’s right to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems.”
Today we know that millions of farmers around the world endure poverty due to inadequate prices for crops on global commodity markets. Reality Tours explores the realities of today’s global food system and connects with the global movement for food sovereignty in our partnership with Food First and by highlighting Fair Trade as an agricultural alternative.
Fair Trade guarantees farmers a decent price for their harvest and means community development, education, health, and environmental stewardship for farmers around the world.
Join a Global Exchange Fair Harvest delegation and learn about the importance of Fair Trade coffee in Nicaragua, olives in Palestine, and cocoa in the Dominican Republic as you contextualize the debate between "Fair Trade" and "free trade" crops.
Or join us on a Food Sovereignty Tour. Journey to Mexico for the Conserving Oaxaca’s Food and Agriculture Heritage delegation or to Bolivia to explore Llamas, Quinoa and Andean Food Sovereignty.
Finally, we still have a few spaces open for our newest Reality Tour, November 1-11, 2012 with the world renowned Dr. Vandana Shiva -- Sacred Seeding and Rights of Nature. Don't miss this unique opportunity to share ideas with Dr. Shiva.
Here’s to a healthy global food system!
