After years of pressure on October 3, 2012 the Hershey’s company announced that it will purchase 100% ethically sourced cocoa by 2020. This is a huge step for Hershey's to improve its supply chain accountability and shows that it is responsive to consumer pressure so let’s keep the pressure on and ensure that Hershey’s goes Fair Trade.
To truly address child labor, Hershey's needs to make sure it is certifying all of its cocoa Fair Trade -- the only certification that adequately addresses the worst forms of child labor. By purchasing Fair Trade Certified cocoa, Hershey can truly fulfill its mission to bring sweet moments of Hershey happiness to workers, farmers, children, consumers and shareholders worldwide every day! I congratulate you on taking this step and urge you to choose Fair Trade certified cocoa. To truly address child labor, your company needs to make sure it is buying cocoa with the only certification that adequately addresses the worst forms of child labor. I urge you to pay a fair price for cocoa so that you address the root causes of child labor and that you make sure to have a traceable supply chain so that it can be guaranteed.
As a consumer of chocolate I want to make sure that everyone along the supply chain is treated fairly.
