Help protect Ghana forests and wildlife from mining
To: Mr. Jonathan A. Allotey, Executive Director Ghana EPA Dear Sir, I am concerned about the proposed Akyem gold mine that would be built inside the Ajenjua Bepo Forest Reserve in Ghana. I am concerned about the impacts that the mine would have on communities, wildlife, and forests. If built as proposed, the mine would destroy about 70 hectares of protected forest, or a quarter of the Reserve. The Forest Reserve provides habitat to threatened species of birds, plants, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. The mine would also risk contamination of water and the environment from cyanide, heavy metals, and acid drainage from 15 million tonnes of mine wastes. In addition, the mine would displace over a thousand people from their homes and at least eight thousand people would lose their land. We urge the EPA to protect Ghana’s unique forests and natural resources and communities by denying permits for mining in Forest Reserves, and by not permitting the Akyem gold mine. Thank you.
