Tell the State Department, we don't need a dirty tar sands oil pipelineACT TODAY: Comment period closes on April 15
TransCanada has proposed to build a pipeline, Keystone XL, to carry dirty tar sands oil through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska and on to the Texas Gulf Coast. Farmers, ranchers, and the rural communities along the route will get all of the impacts and none of the oil. TransCanada wants to use thinner pipe that is more prone to leaks and spills for most of its 1,300 mile route. TransCanada needs a permit from the U.S. State Department to build this pipeline. The State Department is taking comments on the issues it should consider in an environmental impact statement. Tell the State Department that the pipeline is not needed at all, as demand for gasoline in the U.S. is dropping and is not likely to rise above current levels in the foreseeable future. Tell the State Department that the pipeline isn’t in the public’s best interest if the health, safety and livelihoods of the farmers, ranchers and rural communities along the route aren’t fully protected. Comments are due April 15, 2009. Feel free to edit the letter, and you can add the points below in your letter, if you wish. INSTRUCTIONS:
