Tell President Obama: don't addict us to dirty tar sands oil

The world's dirtiest and most expensive oil is Canadian tar sands oil.

And it's fueling the U.S. oil addiction at a time when money should instead be invested in clean energy and clean energy jobs.

President Obama campaigned on a new energy economy: one that would create new jobs, one that would give us a cleaner, healthier environment.

But if he doesn't reject the permit for the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, he will increase our addiction to this dirtiest of oils.

Dear President Obama,

Please reject a Presidential Permit for the Keystone XL dirty tar sands oil pipeline. This pipeline would increase the flow of dirty and expensive tar sands oil from Canada to the United States, impeding the transition to a new energy economy and dooming the fight against global warming.

[As James Hansen, the world’s leading climate scientist has written, “[t]he carbon emissions from tar shale and tar sands would initiate a continual unfolding of climate disasters over the course of this century. We would be miserable stewards of creation. We would rob our own children and grandchildren.”]

Oil from the Alberta tar sands is the dirtiest and most expensive oil on Earth. It does not enhance energy security or lower energy prices.

For the sake of the oil industry in Alberta and a few refineries, your administration would be sacrificing pristine boreal forest, adding harmful global warming pollution to the atmosphere and endangering communities along the roughly 2,000 mile route of the pipeline.

The tar sands industry has expanded recklessly over the past decade, at great cost to the environment and the health of downstream aboriginal communities. Two new tar sands pipelines are already built in the Northern Plains and the Midwest, even though the need for them is unproven. We do not need yet another pipeline to carry oil that is not needed, and which will encourage even more reckless development.

Mr. President, there is no effort more important than the creation of a new energy economy. Dirty and expensive tar sands oil cannot be part of that effort. The Keystone XL pipeline represents a giant step backward.

Please do not issue a Presidential Permit for this pipeline.
