Tell Governor Cuomo: the whole nation is watching how New York handles fracking and public health

and breathe if you permit fracking without science

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has a chance to set an example for how responsible government should protect public health from fracking's impacts.

But right now, it looks like the only example he's going to set will be a bad one.

The state's health review is proceeding under a veil of secrecy, without any chance for input from health profesionals, or directly impacted communities.

To make things worse, the state is moving forward with fracking rules before the health review is even finished -- severing science from the rulemaking process.

TAKE ACTION: Let Governor Cuomo know we're watching. Urge him to release the public health review and allow public comment. Tell him he needs to keep his promise to allow the science to determine whether New York moves forward with fracking.

You have a chance to set a national example on how to protect public health from the impacts of fracking. But right now, the example you're on track to set is a bad one.

New York is reviewing the health impacts of gas development, something few states have done. But it’s a secret process, and millions of New Yorkers who could bear the burden of unknown consequences have been left in the dark.

Without input from health professionals, researchers, and affected communities—who have important information and knowledge—the review will be very limited and lack credibility.

And by proposing revised fracking regulations before the Departments of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Health (DOH), and their outside experts have had the chance to conduct a comprehensive review of fracking's consequences, your administration is making a sham of the rulemaking process.

Even worse, you are revoking your promise to let science determine policy decisions on fracking. You are signaling that the public health impacts of fracking aren’t important. But this knowledge IS critical, and must be used to shape regulations and ultimately determine whether or not to permit fracking in New York State.

Please release the health review, allow for public comment and public hearings, and hold off on fracking regulations until the science is in and the public’s questions have been answered.
