Californians: Support Green Jobs!

February 10, 2010 Subject: I write in strong support of SB 1672 (Steinberg), the "Renewable Energy, Climate Change, Career Technical Education, and Clean Technology Job Creation Bond Act." The Act’s proposed solutions to pressing environmental and economic problems in California are truly visionary. The Act will create a 3 billion dollar fund to provide grants and loans to state, regional, and local partnerships for career technical education and job training; to support green business growth and job creation; to create meaningful employment and green pathways out of poverty; and to promote high school completion. The fund has the capacity to stimulate the state and regional economies, creating clean, green jobs for Californians who live in low-income and polluted communities. SB 1672 will create many benefits for California’s communities, environment, and economy by: :: Fight global warming and pollution by growing the green, clean economy. The bill invests in clean technologies, renewable energy, and energy efficiency -- all critical to saving ourselves from the global warming climate crisis. It also provides for cleanup of toxins in our land and water. :: Stimulate the green economy and create jobs. The Act provides loans, grants, and incentives for green businesses to grow -- and to create good-paying jobs, a robust economy, and a strong tax base for state and local governments. :: Help people lift themselves out of poverty through green-collar career opportunities. Millions of Californians are stuck in low-wage, dead-end jobs or face unemployment. This bill focuses on training and career opportunities for Californians left out of the pollution-based economy. :: Promote high school graduation. Every year, an astounding 150,000 students in California drop out of high school. The bill helps students finish high school and start green careers. SB 1672 is a powerful statement about the values of the people of California, and a critically needed investment in our future that protects our environment and empowers low-income Californians with the education to training they'll need to succeed in the growing green economy.
