Draft Jim Riddle to the USDA

Our friends at Equal Exchange have direct access to an advisor for the Obama USDA transition team. We will be submitting your names (but keeping your contact information private) to their combined petition to draft Jim Riddle to the position of heading the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, which is the department that oversees organic standards in the U.S. Our hope is to get this petition in front of the team soon, so that Jim Riddle, a longtime advocate for sustainable and organic farming, will be considered for the post. The OCA can imagine no better leader of the USDA National Organic Program.

Make your voice heard! Restore integrity to the National Organic Program by drafting Jim Riddle to the USDA.

We, the undersigned, whole-heartedly endorse Jim Riddle to serve in President-Elect Barack Obama's Department of Agriculture. We value his experience as Chair and Executive Committee member of the National Organic Standards Board, University of Minnesota' Organic Outreach Coordinator, and his instrumental role in the development of standards and documents that heavily influenced the National Organic Program's Final Organic Rule.

Riddle has worked with 19 State Departments of Agriculture and the following agencies: Agricultural Marketing Service; Economic Research Service; Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service; Agricultural Research Service; Natural Resource Conservation Service; Risk Management Agency; National Ag Library; Foreign Ag Service; National Ag Statistics Service; and Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education.

Without leaders like Jim Riddle, who've sparked real change in Rural America with his work in organics and sustainability, the next Department of Agriculture will be caught flatfooted while the food and agriculture sectors continue to merge and transform at astonishing rates over the next four years. Therefore, we hope to see Jim Riddle in a prominent position in your administration where his talents can help Rural America and the entire country capitalize on these coming changes.
