Tell Whole Foods: No Sweatshop Beef!

The Organic Consumers Association has reported on the chronic abuses of workers rights at the Beef Northwest feedlot in Oregon and the United Farm Workers' ongoing union drive.

While Whole Foods is an industry leader in promoting animal welfare standards, they have lagged in protecting workers rights. OCA believes that a healthy and sustainable food system depends on respect for the workers, animals and the environment. As a consumer, I just do not understand why Whole Foods continues to ignore the serious issues facing workers who fatten the Country Natural Beef that is sold in your stores.

You know about the discrimination against women of color, ongoing threats and intimidation against workers who exert their rights. Yet Whole Foods remains silent. More than 10,000 consumers have sent you e-mails on this issue. Still no action.

It's depressing to note that your company continues to ignore these worker abuses, yet has just announced a 1 to 5 rating system for the meat sold in your stores to protect the animals whose meat you sell from being abused. 

This rating system has no credibility as long as you refuse to openly and publicly denounce the human rights abuses being committed against the workers who fatten Country Natural Beef cows. 

It's time to end your silence and hypocrisy and demand that Beef Northwest take immediate action to end its discrimination against women of color, union supporters and to begin immediate negotiations with the UFW, whom a majority of workers have already chosen as their union.

Please live up to the image you are trying to project to your customers.
