Send an "Unchain Your Heart" letter to the editor.

Over the next 4 weeks, thousands of people across the country will be mobilizing to "Unchain their Heart", just in time for Valentine's Day. Here is a chance to make our voice heard!

We have included a form letter for your convenience, but a personally crafted letter is more effective, so we encourage you to write it yourself. Please try to convince the reader in as few words as possible. The shorter and more powerful a letter is, the more likely it is to get published. Good luck!

"Unchain Your Heart" and send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper this Valentine's Season. Here, you will find a prewritten letter that you may submit to your local paper, using our online submission tool, or you may modify the letter or write your own. It's easy to spread the word!

The "Letters" section of your local newspaper is the most widely read section of the paper! Writing letters to the editor is an effective and easy way to communicate your perspective to both the community in general and journalists covering that this issue is important to you.

This Valentine's Day millions of well-meaning, but misinformed Americans
will once again be buying roses and chocolates for their loved ones without
realizing that their gifts are very likely tainted by toxic pesticides,
child slavery, and labor exploitation.

Over forty percent of the world's chocolate comes from Africa's Cote
d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast), where the International Labor Organization (ILO)
and the U.S. State Department have reported widespread instances of child
slavery and labor exploitation. In addition, most our our Valentine's Day
flowers come from Colombia and Ecuador, where toxic pesticides sprayed on
roses and cut flowers are poisoning the land and flower workers, many of
whom are young women. Florists who handle non-organic flowers often
develop skin diseases, while studies have shown that workers in the flower
industry commonly suffer from pesticide poisoning. Commercial flowers are
the most heavily-sprayed and toxic agricultural crops on earth.

Of course, I'm not suggesting that people stop buying their loved ones'
chocolate and roses for Valentine's Day. There is a safe and humane
alternative. This Valentine's Day I'll be buying organic and fair trade
flowers and chocolate, and urging my friends and family to do the same.
