Will YOU Support Workers?

Our economy is in shambles, poverty is on the rise and our labor system is broken. Workers throughout the food system and other industries are routinely paid poverty wages, without healthcare or other benefits, and are disempowered by unfair labor laws. The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) would provide a level playing field for workers and strengthens penalties against companies that illegally coerce or intimidate employees in an effort to prevent them from forming a union

What does the Employee Free Choice Act do? It does three things to level the playing field for employees and employers:

1. Strengthens penalties against companies that illegally coerce or intimidate employees in an effort to prevent them from forming a union;
2. Brings in a neutral third party to settle a contract when a company and a newly certified union cannot agree on a contract after three months;
3. Lets employees decide how to express their choice to organize, either by balloting or by majority sign-up, meaning that if a majority of the employees sign union-authorization cards, validated by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), a company must recognize the union.

The economy is in shambles, poverty is on the rise, and corporate exploitation of labor is still the norm. The economic tailspin has put the middle class, our country's backbone, in peril. Rising health care costs, home foreclosures, stagnant wages, and shrinking retirement plans are all taking a huge toll.

To revive the economy and rebuild the middle class in the long term, we need to empower workers to negotiate for better wages and benefits.

The Employee Free Choice Act will do just that - allowing workers to form a union when a majority of them want one.  It will also stiffen penalties on employers who harass, intimidate, and fire workers for their support of a union.
American workers trying to form or join a union today have the odds stacked against them. Major corporations routinely coerce, intimidate, or even fire employees who try to unionize. They can essentially veto their workers’ choice to form a union.

We need a system that puts the power to organize back in the hands of American workers, and the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) does just that. It prevents corporate bullying and allows hard-working men and women to form a union so long as a simple majority supports it. It’s democracy in the workplace, and it’s common-sense fairness.

Big business and their super-rich CEOs are already flooding radio and television with attack ads, but we shouldn’t back down now. Big CEOs pay themselves seven-digit salaries with eight-digit bonuses while giving nothing back to the people who work their entire lives. It’s time for a change. A yes vote for EFCA is that change.
