Take Action! Help Farmers Transition to Organic!
|
Pennsylvania House Bill No. 2347 will provide assistance to farmers seeking to transition to organic agriculture. This transition is difficult to make in that farmers must use organic techniques (no pesticides or antibiotics) for three years in order to become certified organic. During the transition time, however, the farmer's profit margin is low to nonexistent because they are spending more money on labor for weeding, certified organic feed and seed, or expensive alternatives to pesticides and antibiotics in order to ensure an organic product for sale, but they cannot market that product as organic until after their three-year transition time is up. For farmers who are struggling financially already, there is little incentive to switch to organic. Yet ideally, we need to switch all farming to organic as soon as possible in order to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. Farmers who have already converted to organic need support too in order to stay in business or expand. Let your representatives know that you want to see Bill No. 2347 pass, and that you want more funding for organic agriculture! More Resources: |
