Immediate Action Needed on Pesticides in the Farm Bill
|
Please call your Member of Congress today and ask them to sign on to a letter to the Farm Bill Conference Committee urging them to protect the right to use less toxic pesticides. To reach your Member of Congress, call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Read the Congressional letter here. Conferees to the Farm Bill (Democrat and Republican Senators and Representatives from the Agriculture Committees of Congress who are negotiating the final Farm Bill language) are considering an amendment to Section 1244 of the Food Security Act of 1985 (16 U.S.C. 3844) that would prohibit the USDA from exercising its authority to restrict specific pesticides in its conservation programs. The amendment would strip the USDA of its ability to restrict pesticide use through its conservation programs. For example, the Environmental Quality Incentives Program could not be used for organic transition, and USDA would not be allowed to prohibit the use of a specific pesticide, like methyl bromide, in a conservation program. Please take action to stop Congress from undermining USDA’s ability to use its conservation programs to (i) curtail dangerous pesticides that exceed safety thresholds or have not been fully tested, and (ii) advance the transition to organic production and land management. Please personalize the following letter to let your members of Congress (U.S. Representatives and Senators) know that you want them to convince the House-Senate Farm Bill conference committee to reject the Goodlatte pesticide amendment and allow USDA to advance conservation practices as needed. |
