Save DC's Neighborhood Schools

23 DC schools are slated to close by August 2008. More than 5,000 students will be in different schools by September 2008. The school closings were first publicly announced in the Washington Post on November, 2007. Neither parents, teachers, administrators nor the D.C. City Council were aware of the 23 proposed closings. In addition to the 23 schools, 27 more District public schools are slated for restructuring. This could mean more school closings. At the hearing held on the closing of the schools on January 14th, it became obvious that there were never any real criteria for closing the schools, that the people of DC were never consulted about the closures, and most importantly that Chancellor Rhee's ultimate plan will inevitably result in the conversion of the traditional public school system into a charter school system.

The people have spoken: All but one of the 60 witnesses that spoke at the hearing were against the closure of the schools.

It has been two years since we won the money to modernize our schools. You should speed up the modernization of our schools rather than exploit their state of disrepair to justify the closure or privatization of our neighborhood schools.

No school closures should be allowed until all city agencies are moved into publicly owned buildings including schools with "excess" space. Schools should be utilized to host wrap-around agencies that provide social welfare services for the city.

The siphoning of resources from our traditional public schools by Chancellor Rhee, our council members and by the charter schools must be stopped immediately. You should draft legislation to stop charter schools from dumping unwanted students on traditional public schools. No school closures or consolidations should be allowed until there is a cap on charter schools.
