Call your Senators now and tell them to oppose these proposals to gut the CFPB!

In a last minute development, opponents of financial reform are pushing for votes TODAY on amendments to gut the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) (AMENDMENT NUMBER #391 - Moran), and to repeal the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act entirely (AMENDMENT NUMBER #394 - DeMint) . A vote to delay and try to derail curbs on fees banks charge merchants – and thus the consumer – on debit cards is already scheduled (AMENDMENT NUMBER #392 - Tester).

Subject: Re: Executive Order on campaign finance disclosure

Your Letter:

Dear President Obama,

Thank you for indicating a commitment to election transparency. I write to ask you to sign the Executive Order requiring disclosure of political spending by government contractors.

The 2010 election cycle was tainted by hundreds of millions of secret dollars funneled through innocuously-named 501(c) organizations that ran often-misleading attack ads. This abuse of the tax code made it almost impossible for Americans to judge the credibility and bias of those funding the ads, hindering their ability to make an informed vote. Further, the lack of transparency in the election process makes it impossible to assess any favoritism or quid pro quo on behalf of the elected officials supported by those secret dollars.

We applaud you, Mr. President, for taking this step to give Americans the tools to make informed voting decisions and hold elected officials (and corporations) accountable. Your signature on the Executive Order will help us down the path to greater fairness and transparency in our electoral system.
