WE NEED BOLD AND EQUITABLE CLIMATE LEGISLATION NOW!

At this very moment, Congress is debating legislation that will jumpstart our economy and help solve the climate crisis. But that legislation is under attack by the coal and nuclear industry, and our representatives in the South are at the heart of the debate. Will this bill protect the people or give handouts to the polluters? It’s up to you.

We must send a strong message to Congress!

1. Make polluters pay! We need Congress to auction 100% of pollution permits. Big oil and coal caused this problem -- they should pay for the solution.

2. Support clean energy, not dirty coal and nuclear! We need to prioritize the cleanest energies like wind and solar. Coal and nuclear put our communities at risk and don't deserve government support.

3. Bring Clean Industry to the Southeast! We need to ensure that the green economic development is brought to the most economic struggling areas of the South East and helps workers transition from old dirty industries to the new green economy.

As a young person, I am looking to Congress to pass bold and comprehensive climate and energy legislation in 2009.  Our economy, our future, and the health of our communities depend on it.

I am very excited to see a real discussion about climate and energy legislation, and want to support this important process and highlight my most important issues.

FIRST, PRIORITIZE CLEAN ENERGY: We should be prioritizing and supporting clean energy, not nuclear energy and so-called clean coal.  A renewable portfolio standard should be bold and clean, focusing on wind and solar.  Nuclear energy puts local communities at risk, is expensive, and threatens the health of our rivers and the availability of our water supply. It also leaves a toxic legacy to be inherited for generations to come.  Clean coal simply does not exist, and it is irresponsible to mandate an unproven technology, not to mention other environmental impacts of coal mining.

SECOND, MAKE POLLUTERS PAY!  My generation is tired of corporate give-aways to polluters, and strongly support auctioning 100% of pollution credits.

THIRD, HELP BUILD A CLEAN ENERGY ECONOMY.  As young people, we want to power our future with clean energy, we want to be employed with good paying green jobs, and we believe this is the path to a strong and healthy economy.   The first step is passing a strong climate and energy bill that puts clean energy first and makes polluters pay.

I know my future is at stake.   Passing strong clean energy and climate policies can help create a clean energy economy now and protect the environment. Please be a leader for my future.
