Stop the Russian Government from Illegally Reopening the Baikal Paper Mill

Take action to stop the re-opening of the Pulp and Paper Mill on Lake Baikal!

On Monday, August 24th, the plant is supposed to resume its operation, following a decision made by Putin to reopen the plant for 10 months. The Baikalsk Pulp and Paper Mill has dumped chlorine and dioxin byproducts into Lake Baikal for over 40 years. Last October, the plant was temporarily shut down to allow for the mill to be converted to a closed cycle system. After the owners realized the mill could no longer produce the same products with the closed cycle system, the company shut down the plant permanently, firing its workers and leaving behind tons of untreated toxic industrial waste.

Lake Baikal is the world's deepest lake and holds 20% of the world's fresh water and is home to unique and fragile biodiversity. Join Pacific Environment and Russia's Baikal Environmental Wave  in our efforts to stop the mill's re-opening! This is a critical moment to show the support of the global community to protect Lake Baikal. Sign on to our letter here asking Russia's President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin to take action to save Lake Baikal and close the mill for good!
