Stop Offshore Oil Drilling in the American Arctic

Shell is not prepared to operate safely in the Arctic. Even the oil giant itself seems to agree. It declared that it was abandoning its plans to drill for oil off the coast of Alaska in 2013.

But a recent government review of Shell’s Arctic drilling program, which was prompted by the company’s chain of embarrassing failures and near-disasters in 2012, disappointingly concluded with only a handful of recommendations for Shell.

What’s worse, the Department of the Interior did not own up to the role it played in putting indigenous communities and natural wildlife at risk by allowing Shell to rush into offshore drilling without adequate preparation for the region’s extreme conditions or inevitable human missteps.

Take action today. Tell President Obama to show us how serious he is about climate change and ask him to reevaluate our country’s Arctic offshore oil and gas program.
