Dear Colleagues and Friends,
As the holidays approach, I have some fabulous news that is a good omen for a clean energy future. The official word from both the State of California and the U.S. Department of Energy is that imported LNG is not needed in the U.S. That's right -- the polluting, greenhouse gas spewing, foreign fossil fuel, and the thing I have spent most of the last 4 years keeping out of California -- is not needed.
That's an argument myself and Pacific Environment made 4 years ago, one we've made countless times since, and now it's official. What's better is that the California Public Utilities Commission projects that natural gas demand will not grow in California because of all the exciting new clean energy laws -- like AB32 -- now on the books.
Common sense would seem to say, then, that this campaign is over. But that's not the case. The LNG companies -- working with utilities like PG&E, SDG&E, and Northwest Natural --are not stopping their drive to hook us to their fuel. To them, LNG doesn't have to make sense--as long as they can sign the contracts for it, they'll make some profit.
Which is why I need your help. Pacific Environment is committed to fight LNG until the last West Coast proposal screams 'uncle'. We need to continue to help activists in places as disparate as Coos Bay, Los Angeles, and Oxnard to fight this insidious attempt at selling us a new fossil fuel. This is a fight we can win, but we need your help--no matter how big or small--to carry on.
