2008 has been a year of change for me. I am so happy to find myself landing at Pacific Environment as the year draws to a close, working alongside intelligent, passionate people dedicated to protecting and preserving the amazing environment around the Pacific Rim. Life is funny… how could I have known when I affixed my first bumper sticker, “Save the Whales”, on the back of my first car, an orange VW Rabbit I lovingly referred to as a miscolored lemon, that someday my work would be precisely that!
To Save the Whales our Pacific Environment website will soon sport campaign pages about my work on our Marine Sanctuaries Campaign to protect California’s coastal jewels – our four National Marine Sanctuaries - from ocean noise and the negative impacts of shipping.
Did you know that about 11,000 massive oil tankers and cargo ships travel through the San Francisco Bay every year, virtually unregulated? Not only do these vessels spew chemical pollution, they also pose serious threats to whales from fatal ship strikes to the incessant flood of noise the global fleet is pouring into our oceans. Whales, dolphins, porpoises and sea turtles – they are all acoustic animals surviving and thriving by sound.
The blue whale once communicated with others of its species across entire oceans. Today, the distance over which these whales can hear each other has been reduced by around nine-tenths because of increased noise levels.
