Millions of Pakistanis have been displaced. They’ve fled with nothing; they’re coping with enormously desperate conditions, and they are unable to access emergency aid.
The U.S. has just authorized $1.5 billion to aid Pakistan. It remains unclear, however, how this funding will be spent, and there is fear that little will be spent on immediate assistance to those suffering from the conflict. Instead, a large part may go toward reconstruction and rehabilitation. This is needed in post-conflict situations, but Pakistan is still in the midst of a crisis. Resources are direly needed for immediate relief – food, shelter, drinking water, and trauma-related services particularly for children.
Military operations are expanding into Waziristan and even more Pakistanis are fleeing the conflict. Those who have fled will not be returning any time soon. Aid agencies are overburdened and underfunded. The U.S. must act quickly to ensure that the most pressing needs of the displaced are not ignored.
