Support Displaced People in Sudan

After the referendum in South Sudan, there is still much work that needs to be done. We must urgently focus on:

1) Achieving an agreement between north and south Sudan that protects citizenship rights following the south's likely separation;
2) Upholding commitments made by both parties to protect civilians, especially minority communities in the north and south;
3) Providing basic services and security for people returning home to the south after years in exile.

Tell President Obama that 2011 is a critical year for the peace process in Sudan. He must do everything he can to ensure that the needs of returning and displaced people are met.

Dear President Obama,

Thank you for your high level and sustained engagement in supporting peace between north and south Sudan. I ask that the US maintain the same high level of engagement for peace in Sudan after the referendum.

I encourage you to focus on the following issues: 1) Call on both parties to agree on citizenship rights following the south's likely separation; 2) Urge the Government of Southern Sudan to prioritize basic services and security for people returning home and fund these efforts; 3) Ensure protection for minority communities on either side of the Sudanese border after separation, including by pressing both parties to ensure that all people are protected from any possible violence or backlash that might erupt as a result of the referendum; 4) Continue to stress the need for community consultations at every level of policy and programming in order to ensure that the intentions of Sudanese people are accurately reflected in plans for future engagement in Sudan.

The U.S. has achieved so much in helping to bring peace to Sudan and we continue to have much invested in the future success of both the north and south. The referendum should not be the end of our strong engagement, but rather the beginning. We urge you not to allow unresolved issues to fall by the wayside.

Somalia: Worsening Displacement Crisis

Over the past seventeen years, Somalia has been subject to ongoing civil wars, droughts and floods. Most observers agree that the crisis has never been as acute as it is today. The immense gap between the level of need and the corresponding humanitarian response is striking. Agencies struggle to provide food, water, health care, and other basic assistance to one million internally displaced people because of the worsening security crisis.

Returning Home

This video tells the story of the people of South Kivu -- in the east of the Congo. After years of war and crisis, people are returning from exile in Tanzania and trying to rebuild their lives. Refugees International is calling on the US government and the UN to make greater investments in basic services, like education, health care and food security to help people rebuild their communities and restart their lives.
