Send a letter to the Presidential Candidates asking them to close Guantanamo and Implement the Supreme Court Decision
November 20, 2009
Subject:
Implement Supreme Court Decision; close Guantanamo
Dear Presidential Candidate
I am writing to you at a critical time for the future of the Constitution. The historic Supreme Court ruling in Al Odah v. U.S./Boumediene v. Bush provides a clear mandate for real hearings before fair judges for the men who have been held in Guantanamo for over six years without any real legal process. Unfortunately, this is not the first such Supreme Court decision. The Bush Administration has contemptuously ignored and done everything possible to circumvent two prior Supreme Court decisions, in 2004 and 2006, when Guantanamo detainees' right to habeas corpus hearings, as well as their Geneva Convention rights, were upheld. For the men at Guantanamo, these have been six and a half years with little hope and even less justice. Even this most important decision will mean little if it is pushed aside by an executive claiming ultimate authority to override Constitutional protections. It is critical that your campaign commit not only to implement the Supreme Court's decision in Al Odah/Boumediene, but also to act swiftly and surely to close the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, ensure safe repatriation for its detainees, and restore the Constitution. The past six years have been six years of impunity, disregard for law and justice, and an assault on Constitutional rights and liberties. The Supreme Court has spoken. As a candidate for the presidency of the United States, you have a responsibility to speak clearly and commit your future administration to implement this ruling, close Guantanamo, and turn back six years of devastating and destructive policies. Sincerely,
We will add your signature from the information you provide.
