Ask the ADL to speak out against Hagee's bigotry & warmongering

During July 21-24 controversial Pastor John Hagee is set to take center stage in Washington, DC with the national gathering of his Christians United for Israel (CUFI). The conference and lobby day will offer workshops such as "Radical Islam: In Their Own Words," led by neo-conservative Daniel Pipes and former right-wing Senator Rick Santorum; and "The Basics of The Arab Israeli Conflict," led by representatives of the pro-occupation David Project and StandWithUS, as well as far-right politician Gary Bauer, president of the anti-choice, and homophobic group American Values.

Hagee is known for his anti-Semitic statements and for his words of hate and ignorance towards Muslims, Catholics, gays and lesbians, and others. His views on the Middle East conflict are not much better.

CUFI advocates against an end to the Israeli occupation since it claims that Palestinians have no biblical mandate to own the land.  CUFI has met with White House officials, lobbying them to adopt a more confrontational posture toward Iran, refuse aid to the Palestinians, and give Israel a free hand in Southern Lebanon.

Rabbi Eric Yoffie, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, has stated that “on Israeli-Palestinian politics, John Hagee and the CUFI are extremists. They do not represent most Evangelicals, do not represent most Republicans, and do not represent the American heartland. In expressing contempt for other religions and rejecting territorial compromise under any and all circumstances, their views run against the American grain. Those who advocate embracing them now are misreading in a monumental way the American political and religious landscape.”

A recent poll by J-Street found that in the American Jewish community, 57 percent of those polled had an unfavorable impression of Hagee, and by a 4-to-1 margin they said that Jewish organizations and leaders should not form alliances with CUFI. A recently released documentary by JewsOnFirst highlights Hagee's preoccupation with the Jews.

We are asking the Anti-Defamation League to take a strong stand against Hagee's ignorance, warmongering,  and prejudice.

Pastor Hagee himself has made repeated anti-Semitic statements.

Hagee has identified the anti-Christ as gay and Jewish. Elsewhere, the ADL has stated that "the statement ... that the Antichrist, who is evil incarnate, is Jewish, borders on anti-Semitism at best and is anti-Semitic at worst."

Hagee has used other classic anti-Semitic myths, such as the Jewish control of the Federal Reserve. Elsewhere, the ADL states that "the charge that "Jews control the Federal Reserve" is a classic example of the hatemonger’s paranoid-style exploitation of legitimate concerns — in this case, the nation’s economy."

And yet the ADL does not condemn Hagee's anti-Semitism. Unbelievably, in a recent letter Abe Foxman, ADL's National Director told John Hagee that the ADL "… wholeheartedly support your efforts to eradicate anti-Semitism…"

Hagee blamed the devastation of Katrina on New Orlean's LGBT community.  He has stated that "those who live by the Qur'an have a scriptural mandate to kill Christians and Jews... it teaches that very clearly." The ADL's mission statement states that it  "…fights anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry, defends democratic ideals and protects civil rights for all."  And yet the ADL does not condemn Hagee's bigotry.

Why is the ADL giving a green pass to Hagee?
