During his campaign for presidency, Barack Obama made it clear that he supports a new policy focused on clean, renewable energy. Purchasing dirty Tar Sands oil would have catastrophic consequences at both a local and global level.

Oil from Canada's Tar Sands releases three times the global warming emissions of conventional oil. Its toxic lakes can be seen from outer space. Its destruction is simultaneously global and local, as the Tar Sands refining processes that is accelerating climate change coincides with the appearance of rare cancers in downstream communities.

It would be a catastrophic mistake for the United States to greet this era of climate change by embracing one of the most destructive fossil fuels yet seen on earth.

During your campaign, your energy advisor Jason Grumet voiced skepticism about the viability of Tar Sands oil, and stated that your administration would support energy solutions "that meet our long-term obligations to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions." Maintaining this position is of the utmost importance to Americans, and to the world.

As our newly elected president, I urge you to invest in clean, renewable energy and not accelerate climate change by purchasing dirty Tar Sands oil.
