'Get the Shell out' of the Sacred Headwaters

The Sacred Headwaters is the source of three of North America's most important salmon-bearing rivers, and critical habitat for moose, bears, and caribou. And this year it was named British Columbia's Most Endangered River. The reason: Royal Dutch Shell plans to drill for coalbed methane in this pristine area.

Shell wants to use 'fracking' to extract natural gas. It's a process so risky that some residents in Alberta and Colorado have actually been able to light their tap water on fire after fracking projects contaminated nearby water tables.

Shell has already drilled three wells. They plan to add over 4,000 more.

Tell Shell to get out of the Sacred Headwaters for good.

Dear Mr. Odum,

Canada's Sacred Headwaters, the shared source of three of Canada's critical salmon bearing rivers, is no place for Shell to develop coalbed methane.  The Sacred Headwaters are the shared source of three of North America's wildest and most important salmon-bearing rivers - the Skeena, Nass, and Stikine in northwest British Columbia. This vast wilderness is important summer range for the endangered Osborn caribou and their young, and provides critical habitat for grizzlies, moose, and wolves. North America's largest population of stone sheep use this area for breeding. Last week, the Sacred Headwaters were named the Most Endangered Rivers in British Columbia, with Shell's proposed project named as the biggest threat.

Every downstream community and First Nation has passed resolutions, saying “No” to Shell’s plans to drill for coalbed methane in this region.  Over 60,000 people from around the world have signed postcards supporting these communities, urging Shell to leave.

Opposition will only continue to grow.

With only one year left before the moratorium expires, the whole world will be watching what happens. I urge your company to keep the Sacred Headwaters sacred.
