Tell Johnson & Johnson to Protect Babies from Cancer-Causing Chemicals

In the United Kingdom, Japan, and several other countries, Johnson & Johnson makes its iconic baby shampoo without carcinogens like formaldehyde.

But our latest report, Baby’s Tub is Still Toxic, revealed that in the U.S., Johnson’s Baby Shampoo still contains chemicals linked to cancer.

After getting our new report and a sign-on letter representing 4 million people, Johnson & Johnson agreed to reformulate baby products worldwide to ensure they're free of formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.

This is a great victory, but we know the company can do better. Tell Johnson & Johnson to publicly commit to a timeline to replacing these chemicals with safer alternatives.

Dear Johnson & Johnson,

I am disappointed to learn that your company makes baby shampoo without the formaldehyde-releasing preservative quaternium-15 for customers in some countries, yet continues to use this hazardous chemical in the U.S.

I am, however, glad to learn that because of consumer concerns about formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, J&J recently released a statement saying it is no longer introducing new products with formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and it is phasing out these types of preservatives in baby products worldwide along with the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane.

I ask that Johnson & Johnson make this commitment a reality in all of its baby products sold globally and set a public timetable for replacing these chemicals with safer alternatives. In addition, I ask that your company addresses the other concerns raised in the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics’ letter sent to Johnson & Johnson in 2009, including removing other chemicals of concern from the company’s products. I look forward to the day when the company’s entire product line is free of carcinogens and other chemicals of concern.
