Torture is always wrong
To: President Bush From: People of Faith Re: Torture Dear President Bush, We are shocked at what we found in your Department of Justice's recently released "torture memo:" 81 pages of legalese finding excuse after excuse to ignore our Constitution, our treaties, and even our consciences. As members of the faith community, we can't do that. Mr. President, we urge you to formally reject those recommendations and apologize for the human rights abuses carried out in the name of our country. We come from diverse faith traditions, but we all share a belief that each human being reflects the spirit of God. Torture demeans that spirit in the abused and hardens the conscience of the abuser. Torture flies in the face of the basic tenets of our faith and contradicts the witness of our sacred texts. Torture will never have "justification." It will always "shock the conscience." Signed,
