Stop the Holiday Culture War

Even as we face the most serious financial crisis of a generation--with 1 in 10 Americans on food stamps and millions more facing dire economic conditions--some of our leaders think their time would be better spent chastizing retailers for using the phrase "Happy Holidays."

We don't have time for this.

Sign our petition and as the holiday season rolls along, we'll show politicians and other leaders like James Dobson that people of faith and all Americans would be much better off if they focused their energy on the common good, not the Christmas culture war.

Our petition says:

In this time of national crisis, elected officials, media figures and religious leaders should be concentrating on the real challenges facing this country's families, not bickering over holiday greetings.

With a record number of Americans now on food stamps and thousands being foreclosed on every month, we urge you to refocus your efforts to make sure these basic human needs are met.

Help for those most in need is much closer to the true spirit of the holiday than saying the words "Merry Christmas."

Who are we targeting? Politicians, media personalities and religious figures who should be trying to provide leadership in this time of crisis, not proofreading retailers adverstisements.

Our list so far:

Focus on the Family. Just after laying off nearly 20% of the Focus on the Family workforce, Focus on the Family Action is pouring its energy into their "I stand for Christmas" campaign, which focuses neither on families nor the values at the heart of the Christmas holiday, but on whether or not retailers use the word "Christmas" in their promotional materials.

Utah State Senator Chris Buttars is sponsoring a resolution calling for local retailers to say "Merry Christmas" and not "Happy Holidays."

Bill O'Reilly has relaunched his perennial "war on Christmas" campaign, singling out the governor of Washingon state.
