President Piñera – Pull the Plug on Patagonia Dams!
It's been several years since International Rivers began working with a diverse coalition of Chilean and international organizations to protect Patagonia’s wild rivers from massive hydroelectric development. In fact, with the participation of people like you, the coalition has been successful in delaying the HidroAysén project, a proposal to build 5 destructive dams on the Baker and Pascua rivers.
HidroAysén's Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) – initially submitted in August 2008 while President Michelle Bachelet was in office – is still going through the environmental review process. At the end of June, the new Chilean government, headed by billionaire President Sebastian Piñera, granted the fourth extension to HidroAysén, to enable them to yet again address the hundreds of flaws and omissions in the EIA. The burden of responsibility for Patagonia’s rivers is now clearly on President Piñera’s shoulders.
The good news is, President Piñera can “Pull the plug on Patagonia dams” by rejecting the HidroAysén EIA.
You can help! Send an email to the Chilean government calling on President Piñera to “Pull the Plug on patagonia dams” and reject the HidroAysén EIA.
- Although President Piñera claims to be working on government transparency, he doesn't have a public email address. Thus, your letters will be sent to various people within the Chilean government and US Chilean Embassy.
