The letter asks them to vote against SB 312, a bill which will force fluoridation on every community of Louisiana. November 21, 2009 Subject: Dear Representative, Please do not fall victim of a very slick PR campaign to trick you into supporting a very poor medical practice. To date you have only been told one side of the story on water fluoridation. Please find out the other side before you vote on SB 312. Please go to www.FluorideAlert.org and find out why over 1,700 scientific, medical, and environmental professionals are calling for an end to fluoridation worldwide. This list includes a Nobel prize winner in Medicine, three members of the National Research Council (NRC) panel which reviewed the toxicity of fluoride in a ground breaking study in 2006, and three executive board members of the Union representing professionals at the US Environmental Protection Agency. Here are 10 reasons not to vote for SB 312. There are many more. 1) Most western countries do not fluoridate their water and yet their teeth are just as good as those that do. http://www.FluorideAlert.org/who-dmft.htm 2) Many cities that once fluoridated their water in North America have now stopped, including Quebec City in April, 2008. http://www.FluorideAlert.org/communities.htm 3) If you vote for this measure you are forcing a medicine on ALL the citizens of Louisiana. This is something that a doctor cannot do to ANY citizen in Louisiana. A doctor cannot force an individual to take medicine without their informed consent. 4) This is bad medicine. Water utilities can control the concentration of fluoride added to water but they cannot control the dose people get because they cannot control how much water they drink, and some people drink a lot! 5) Americans now get fluoride from many other sources besides the water — including dental products, processed foods, pesticide residues, teas, and some medications. According to recent surveys, some children swallow more fluoride from toothpaste alone than is recommended as a total daily intake (Levy 1999). 6) Our kids are not deficient in fluoride, they are being over-exposed. 32% of US kids now have dental fluorosis (discoloration and mottling of the enamel caused by excess fluoride ingestion) (CDC, 2005). Poor kids do not need fluoride -- they need better access to dental care. That’s where precious taxpayers dollars should go, not paying to put toxic chemicals into the public water supply. 7) The level at which water is fluoridated is not small (1 ppm), it is actually 250 times higher than the level in mothers milk (0.004 ppm). On November 9, 2006 the American Dental Association advised that parents bottle–feeding their babies should not use fluoridated water. How are families of low income going to get a source of non-fluoridated water for this purpose? 8) If you don’t think fluoride is a very toxic substance, take a moment and read the warning on the back of any tube of fluoridated toothpaste. Also, please read the January 2008 issue of Scientific American which summarizes the health effects (e.g. thyroid disruption, damage to the developing brain, and bone fracture) recently found by the National Research Council (2006) panel at doses some Americans are getting in fluoridated communities. 9) Fluoride is NOT a nutrient. It works from the outside of the tooth not from inside the body (CDC, 1999, 2001). There is no reason to swallow fluoride. It makes more sense to brush with fluoridated toothpaste and spit it out. This maximizes the benefits but minimizes the risks. 10) The chemicals used to fluoridate are not pharmaceutical grade -- as is the case with dental products -- but are industrial waste products obtained from the wet scrubbers of the phosphate fertilizer industry. They cannot dump this stuff into the sea by international law but we allow them to put it into our water! Dilution is not the answer to pollution.
