Protect caribou in Manitoba

Dear Premier Selinger,

The future of woodland caribou and people are directly connected. Caribou need large intact Boreal Forests to avoid predators and find enough food to ensure their survival; we all need its large carbon stores to help slow the effects of climate change. Conservation science tells us we must protect at least half of the Boreal in its untamed state for it to remain fully functioning as a component of earth’s life support system.

Please announce a plan to work with First Nations and all Manitobans to protect more than half of Manitoba’s Boreal Region from industrial developments. Establishing the blueprint for this large protected areas network must focus on woodland caribou ranges, areas with high carbon storage value, and places of importance to First Nations. As an immediate step toward achieving this goal, it is essential that all logging and logging road construction be halted in intact woodland caribou habitats.

Thank you Mr. Premier. Taking these actions will be a giant leap toward a healthy future for caribou, Manitobans, and all life.
