Protect caribou in Quebec

CONSIDERING :

WHEREAS woodland caribou is a threatened species in Canada and is designated vulnerable in Quebec since March 16, 2005 (Quebec Endangered Species Act):

WHEREAS intact Boreal forest, critical habitat for woodland caribou is becoming more and more fragmented due to industrial activity;

WHEREAS current forestry policies encourage and accelerate fragmentation of the intact forest;

WHEREAS, the recovery of woodland caribou will fail without a strong political commitment to the survival of the species

AND

THAT a recovery plan for woodland caribou exists and was published in April 2009, and the primary objective is to maintain its current range;

I, a Canadian citizen, am concerned with the fate of Canada’s woodland caribou and support protecting caribou and their carbon-rich home - Canada's Boreal wilderness, ask the Quebec government to undertake the following actions:

Put in place all the recommendations:

Apply the recommandations of the Quebec Woodland caribou recovery plan.

SUSPEND the logging immediatly in the caribou critical habitat in the area of the Lac Evans, Broadback River and Assinica Cree Heritage park proposition.

CREATE large protected areas at least 5,000 sq. km in the Boreal forest that’s still considered intact, straddling the northern limit of managed forests, the zone called “The Caribou belt”
