President's Participation at Baldrige Ceremony

For four out of the past five years, President George W. Bush has asked Vice President Cheney to substitute for him at the presentation ceremony for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

Many people and organizations, including the American Society for Quality, believe the President ought to be present in person to present the awards and impart the necessary dignity and importance appropriate for the nation’s highest award for quality.

Please take a few moments to read this letter and send it to the White House today. It’s quick and easy. (Signature fields denoted with an asterisk (*) are required.)

You may modify the text. Including your observations based on your own personal or organizational experience with the Baldrige Award program is encouraged.

Dear Mr. President

On November 20 a historic milestone event took place when the 20th annual class of Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award recipients was announced.  The five recipients will receive their awards at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., next spring.

I am writing to encourage you to attend the next Baldrige Awards Ceremony and personally present the awards to these outstanding organizations.

By original intention and longstanding tradition, the presentation of the awards is made by the President of the United States.  This will be the last opportunity you will have to present the awards.  Events may have prevented you from personally handing out the awards in recent years.  But now is the perfect time to re-establish the tradition.

Nothing conveys the importance and stature of the Baldrige Award more meaningfully than the presence of the President at the ceremony to present the awards and congratulate the winners.

Baldrige recipient organizations represent the best of America—models of performance excellence for other organizations to learn from and emulate.  They have a broad impact on the American economy.  Lessons learned by the Baldrige recipients cascade down to thousands of other organizations.  Surely their achievements are deserving of the President’s personal attention.

Please continue to demonstrate your support for the Baldrige program.  Put the Baldrige Awards Ceremony on your schedule and make sure it remains a continuing high priority for you and for your successors.
