WRITE ON FOR THE BUFFALO!

Letters to the Editor are a great way for you to reach out to a lot of people in your community, state, region, and beyond.

The editorial section is the most widely-read section of newspapers, and even local papers can reach thousands of readers. With so many papers on line these days, even people from around the world can touch base from afar.

Please consider writing Letters to the Editor for the buffalo, to highlight the importance of protecting America's last wild buffalo. If you have seen articles about the buffalo printed, write a letter in response. Your letters will help raise awareness and encourage others to act on the buffalo's behalf.

A larger mile radius will result in more newspapers you can send to! 2) Click "get papers" and when the papers appear, choose one (to start). 3) A sample letter will appear. We strongly suggest you to edit the sample letter.

HELPFUL TIPS:

* You can send one letter to one paper at a time. You can come back and send letters to additional papers.

* Keep your letters between 250-300 words, as most papers will not accept letters longer than that.

* Include your complete information and phone number. Many papers will call you to verify that you sent in the letter.

* Consider making a follow-up phone call a couple days after you've sent your letter. This will help ensure your letter is printed!

The wild bison of the Yellowstone region are the last remaining wild bison left in America.  Fewer than 4,000 wild bison exist today, and they are ecologically extinct throughout their native range of North America.

While these iconic species should be protected under the Endangered Species Act, they are not.  They are under constant attack by the federal government and livestock interests in Montana.  Even Yellowstone National Park - the agency that should be protecting them - fully participates in their harassment and slaughter.

I call on everyone who reads these words, everyone who cares about wildlife and wild lands and the untamed spirit of the wild American west to learn more and take action!  Please look into the work of Buffalo Field Campaign, a Montana-based grassroots group working in defense of wild buffalo, and learn how you can help.

If everyone would take just one moment to contact your members of Congress and urge them to find habitat-based solutions for the wild buffalo of Yellowstone, stop funding their harassment and slaughter, and remove cattle from our public lands it will make a powerful difference for a powerful animal.  The Yellowstone population is all that remains of the tens of millions that once spanned the continent, and they need our help to regain that ground and roam wild and free once again.

The wild buffalo of Yellowstone are America's last continuously wild population, existing on the landscape since prehistoric times. They are the last bison to hold their identity as a wildlife species.

Wild bison have never transmitted brucellosis to livestock, yet Montana's livestock industry and the Federal Government insist that this is why they harass and slaughter bison. Brucellosis is being used by the livestock industry to keep wild bison from restoring themselves on their habitat that invasive cattle have occupied.

Millions of U.S. tax dollars are wasted every year to chase, capture and slaughter wild American bison, when instead, this money should be spent to secure more habitat for these native keystone species.
