To my elected leader:
I am writing today to express my concern about the ongoing conflict involving Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels in Uganda and central Africa and to ask you to cosponsor legislation currently before Congress that would help protect the kids in this region who are being threatened by violence and abduction if you haven't done so already. After two decades of terrorizing northern Uganda, LRA rebels are now attacking communities and abducting children in the surrounding countries of DR Congo, South Sudan and Central African Republic. Just last week, LRA fighters converged on a small town called Bayule in northeastern Congo, attacking a church and abducting more than 80 people. The month before, they invaded a village called Dakwa and kidnapped another 135 civilians, including many children. Immediate efforts are needed to stop the rebels from committing atrocities and rebuilding their forces. A strengthened LRA will destabilize the wider region and could return to northern Uganda. In northern Uganda, the fragile peace has reached a critical crossroads. The conflict resulted in widespread forced displacement and the abduction of tens of thousands of children into the rebel ranks. Effective leadership is needed to help affected communities overcome the destruction wrought by the war and provide a catalyst for stability in one of the world's most volatile regions. Immediate action from policymakers can contribute significantly to regional stability and consolidate recent humanitarian gains, an opportunity that must not be missed. I therefore hope you will cosponsor the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act (S.1067/H.R.2478) that will help permanently put a stop to the LRA and contribute to sustainable peace in central Africa by increasing US engagement of the crisis and assisting communities affected by the violence. I hope that we will be able to work together to help transform the prospect of peace into a reality for the people affected by this violence. I look forward to your reply.
