Please work to get $5 billion for high-speed rail into the stimulus package! High-speed rail will help restructure and strengthen our economy by reducing transportation costs and bringing cities closer together. Building high-speed rail will put people to work laying track and building railcars. Yet, high-speed rail is being left out of the stimulus package! The current marker is a measly $100 million for state investments in rail. That's not nearly enough to change our country's energy and transportation policy. California alone needs $15 billion to build their 220-mph electric high-speed rail network. There are 11 federally designated high speed rail corridors around the nation, each of them with hundreds of millions of dollars worth of ready-to-go projects. Please advocate for a $5 billion investment in passenger rail in the stimulus package, especially electric-powered high-speed trains. This is our chance for real change in transportation and energy policy. Don't let it slip by.
