Background Information

  • Bottled water corporations spend tens of millions on advertising every year, promoting bottled water as better than tap water and undermining confidence in our public water systems.
  • Ads do not disclose that up to 40% of bottled water sold in the U.S. comes from municipal sources, just like tap water.
  • Coke representatives have publicly said that they did not feel Coke is misleading consumers and that the label clearly states that Dasani is ‘purified’ water.
  • Congress just sent letters to Coke and 12 other industry CEO’s demanding to know the sites and sources of their  bottled water.
  • California recently passed legislation requiring bottled water corporations to disclose more information to consumers about the quality and testing of their products.

Sample Script

Call Coke at (800) 438-2653 before 7 PM EST.

Hi, my name is ________. I’d like to speak to CEO Muhtar Kent, please.

You will likely be asked what the question is, or to leave a message:

May I ask who I am speaking with? I have a question for Mr. Kent.

This August, in response to the concern of hundreds of consumers of Coke’s improper labeling of its Dasani water, a representative who identified herself as Lisa indicated that the issue “wouldn’t be solved tonight…but will be discussed in the coming weeks.”  First off, I haven’t heard any response from Coke since.

Secondly, I know that Congress is demanding to know the sites and sources of Coke’s Dasani brand water and that both Pepsi and Nestlé have already taken steps to spell out “Public Water Source” on both Aquafina and Pure Life brands, letting consumers know where their water is coming from.

With all this in mind, I’m wondering when will Mr. Kent and Coke change the label of Dasani to clearly reveal the source of the water in the bottle?

If Coke representative responds:

I’m joining thousands of other people across the country who believe water is a fundamental human right that must not be turned into a for-profit commodity. Please share my question and comment with CEO Kent.

Thanks for calling! Fill in the form above to report your call when you've finished.
