Tell EPA: Deploy the Clean Air Act Now to Fight Climate Change

On April 24, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson took an important step toward regulating greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act. By issuing a proposed finding that greenhouse gas emissions "endanger public health and welfare," the Environmental Protection Agency acknowledged the grave threat that greenhouse pollution poses to everything we hold dear. Despite President Obama's campaign pledge to move forward quickly with greenhouse pollution reduction measures under the Clean Air Act, the administration is under intense pressure to continue to drag its heels. After eight years of Bush administration intransigence, we cannot afford any further delay.

The Clean Air Act is our nation's leading tool for the reduction of greenhouse pollution. The Act has a proven track record of success in protecting the air we breathe from the "traditional" air pollutants. Existing Clean Air Act regulation saves thousands of lives each year and provides economic benefits worth about 42 times the cost of regulation. No changes are needed to the law before it is deployed to reduce greenhouse pollution in a similarly successful and cost-effective way.

The Clean Air Act's very effectiveness makes it the primary target of industries and politicians that continue to oppose solutions to the climate crisis. The Environmental Protection Agency needs to hear from millions of Americans in support of Clean Air Act regulation for greenhouse gases. Please send your letter by the June 23 deadline.
