Tell the House to approve contempt citations against White House officials

In the coming days, we are going to see whether anyone in Washington has the guts to hold the Bush administration responsible for the offenses it has committed against our Constitution.

The Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives are considering whether bring to the House floor contempt charges against White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers for refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas.

Tell your U.S. representative -- whether that person is a Republican or a Democrat -- that it is time for the people’s Congress to take a stand against an executive branch that acts as if it is accountable to no one.

Bolten, Miers must be held in contempt

Of all the tasks before Congress, there may be no task greater than your responsibility to prevent the executive branch from acquiring and exerting too much power.  When a president acts as if he (or she) is not accountable to anyone -- including Congress -- it is Congress’s duty to assert its own power and keep the president, and all other executive branch officials, in check.

This task is before you now.  Last July, White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten and former White House counsel Harriet Miers defied congressional subpoenas and refused to appear before a congressional panel to testify about the circumstances surrounding the firings of nine U.S. Attorneys.  In a sense, they declared to the public that Congress is irrelevant and does not have oversight power over executive branch officials.

Is this what you believe?  Do you want the next administration -- whether it is Republican or Democratic -- to be wholly unaccountable to Congress?

You should not just approve the contempt citations against Bolten and Miers when they come to the House floor; you should do everything in your power to make sure the contempt citations are actually brought to the House floor for a vote.

The founders of this country set up a careful system of checks and balances to keep our nation safe from tyranny.  Bolten and Miers, backed by the president himself, have determined that this system -- basically the Constitution itself -- does not apply to them.  Please do not let them get away with this.  It will set us down a path we do not want to be on.
